Protect Your Home with Copper Chimney Flashing

While a fireplace is a great way to stay warm during the winter, it can pose a threat year round if not protected. Add Protection & Appeal

Copper chimney flashing is a great way to not only protect your home by protecting against water seeping in, but also a great way to add appeal to the exterior of the home. It’s an added layer of protection that, while might be small, provides a large impact.

Durable

Copper is a durable and reliable material that is highly resistant to salt water damage. It also has a long lifespan, so copper chimney flashing should last the lifetime of your room, if installed properly.

Versatile Use

As a relatively lightweight material, copper flashing is an attractive option that doesn’t add stress to the home’s underlying structure. It’s also flexible and easy to work with, allowing for use on a wide range of chimney sizes and shapes.

Weather Resistant

Copper flashing is weather-resistant, fireproof and maintenance-free. This means one less thing for the homeowner to think about!

CLEARVIEW Roofing repaired the white aluminum fascia molding that blew off with the recent storm we had. I called and spoke to Chris. After talking to him on the telephone I texted him photos of the aluminum that needed to be replaced. In no time he responded with an estimate that was fair and reasonable. A crew arrived the next day to do the work. Great Job!! Well done! I highly recommend Clearview Roofing!!

Frequently Asked Questions about Copper Chimney Flashing

To protect your chimney and your home! A leaky chimney can lead to mold growth, rotting wood, structural damages to the home, and improper function of the chimney.

Typically speaking, the life of the roof! Because copper is such a durable and long-lasting material, homeowners can expect their flashing to last multiple decades. However, it’s important to trust a company like Clearview that has been installing copper flashing so you enjoy not only the benefits of the product, but the benefits of a flawless installation.

That depends on you! But we will say that it’s a lifetime material, meaning that you should only have to invest in the installation costs once. With everything in or on a home, maintenance is key, but that is a smaller investment that will help to ensure the lifetime of your initial investment.

Fixing a chimney leak can be a complex task and may require our professional assistance. However, here are some steps you would take to fix a chimney leak:

    1. Identify the source of the leak: Check the roof and the chimney itself to identify the source of the leak. Look for cracked or missing shingles, damaged flashing, or missing mortar between the bricks.

    2. Repair or replace damaged shingles: If you find cracked or missing shingles, you may need to replace them. Make sure to use roofing cement to seal any gaps.

    3. Repair or replace flashing: If the flashing around the chimney is damaged or missing, you may need to replace it. Use a pry bar to remove the old flashing and then replace it with new flashing.

    4. Repair the chimney crown: The chimney crown is the top part of the chimney that helps keep water out. If it’s cracked or damaged, you may need to repair or replace it. Use a masonry caulk to fill in any cracks.

    5. Seal any gaps in the chimney: If you find gaps in the bricks or mortar, use a masonry caulk to seal them.

It’s important to note that fixing a chimney leak can be dangerous, especially if you need to climb on the roof. If you are not comfortable doing it yourself, please give Clearview Roofing a call. We are here to help.

Chimney flashing is a construction technique used to prevent water from penetrating the joint between a chimney and the roof. The flashing consists of thin strips of metal, typically aluminum, copper, or galvanized steel, that are installed at the base of the chimney and run up the sides and over the top.

    How does Chimney Flashing work?

    1. The base flashing is installed at the bottom of the chimney, where it meets the roof. The flashing is typically L-shaped, with one leg extending up the side of the chimney and the other leg lying flat on the roof.

    2. Step flashing is installed on the sides of the chimney. These small pieces of flashing are installed one at a time, with each piece overlapping the previous one and extending up the side of the chimney.

    3. Counter flashing is installed over the step flashing and is bent down to cover the top of each step flashing piece. This creates a waterproof seal that prevents water from seeping in around the chimney.

    4. Finally, a cap flashing is installed over the top of the chimney. This is a flat piece of metal that extends out from the chimney and over the roof. It is bent downward at the edges to create a drip edge that directs water away from the chimney and onto the roof.

Overall, chimney flashing works by creating a watertight barrier around the base of the chimney, preventing water from seeping in and causing damage to the roof and the interior of the home.

The cost of chimney flashing in Long Island, NY can vary depending on several factors such as the size of the chimney, the type of roofing material, and the extent of the damage or deterioration that needs to be repaired.

On average, the cost of chimney flashing repair or installation can range from $750 to $2,500 in Long Island, NY. However, this is just an estimate and the actual cost may be higher or lower depending on the specific circumstances of the job. It is always most cost effective to replace your chimney flashing at the time of a new roof job which would lower the overall cost.
