What is TPO?
TPO stands for Thermoplastic Polyolefin.
Thermoplastic Polyolefin is a single-ply roofing membrane that consists of a single layer of synthetics and reinforcing scrim used to cover flat roofs. They are made in white to increase the reflectivity of the system to keep the roof cool.
TPO is a great material to use on flat roofs in Long Island as well as in warmer climates throughout the country. It is applied with a heat gun and is known for having a superior seam seal than older roof systems.
The TPO membrane can be attached mechanically, self-adhered, ballasted, plate bonded, or with specialized glue. Most manufacturers offer TPO with Fleeceback which allows the membrane to adhere to low-rise urethane foam board.
TPO is a roll system of roofing which means it comes in rolls that measure approximately 8 feet wide by 50 or 100 feet long. This makes for fewer seams an openings on your flat roof project.
The thickness of a TPO membrane most widely used is 60-mils, however, 45-mils is still frequently used. A thicker membrane has a higher durability rating but a thinner membrane may be easier to install.
